SNOW DID NOT IMPROVE GOLFING CONDITIONS

The weather took the honours at the Taupo Golf Club's Jinks over the weekend. Light snow fell during both Saturday and Sunday afternoons and, with a strong wind, playing conditions were as difficult as could be imagined. In the circumstances, the 78 stableford points carded by J. Tonge and P. Arnott to win an aggregate event on Saturday afternoon was a fine performance. Tonge returned 41 points and Arnott had 37 points despite a two-stroke penalty for playing the wrong ball during the round. The A grade individual stableford was dominated by the low-markers, Pat Watson, G. Fearn and T. Clapperton. Each had 38 points, with Watson winning on the count-back from Fearn and Clapperton. Tonge's 41 points won the B grade individual stableford, with P. Potter runnerup with 37 points. Twos were carded by H. Fearn, Pat Watson and G. Moffatt. Sunday 's stableford competition was won by G. Marsland, 35 points, on a

count-back from A. T. Foster. M. B. Orr and A, T. Foster registered twos. A ladies' stableford competition was cancelled because of the weather. Handicap changes are: R. Wilson, 25 to 24; J. Tonge, 14 to 13; G. Perrin, 13 to 12; T. D. Price, 27 to 26; A. Kennedy, 25 to 24; R. How, 24 to 23; M. T. Fisher, 20 to 18; W. Elbe, 26 to 25; G. Dimmock, 18 to 17; J. Purcell, 9 to 8; L. Holdsworth, 11 to 13. The annual Smythe Trophy interclub competition, decided among teams representing the Taupo, Tokoroa, Putaruru and Mangakino clubs, was held at Tokoroa on Sunday. The trophy is decided on 27 holes of stableford play. The Taupo team finished fourth with Tokoroa emerging as the winner. • T. S. LEECH, Taupo, was placed third in the North Island golf stroke-play championship at Gisborne on the weekend. He was five strokes behind the winner, E. J. Gordon, Poverty Bay, and three behind J. P. Means, Wanganui.
