County Favourably Inclined Towards New Store At Hatepe

The Taupo County Council is favourably inclined toward the building of a new store at Hatepe to replace that recently destroyed by fire. Confirmation will first be sought, however, from the District Commissioner of Works, Mr P. F. Reynolds, as to its siting. The county engineer, Mr G. B. Burton, explained that the council's town planning consultant had recommended that if a new store were built, it should be on the north side of the approach road to the Hatepe settlement. This would place it beyond the radius of the curve in the proposed realignment of the main road south. On the new site the store would have access from both the highway and the access road.

There was no confirmed lease for the old site, he added. Be explained that the Hatepe Residents' Committee had written supporting an application to rebuild the store and provide petrol pump facilities. They considered it a matter of urgency that the store be reinstated. The county chairman, Mr H. M. Besley, said that the council -were all behind the residents regarding the replacement of the store. It was just a matter of deciding the best place to put it.
