COINCIDENCE RESULTS IN BOY BEING APPREHENDED

The chance picking up of a hitch hiker in Taupo on Saturday morning by i Mr T„ J. Keehan, the owner ' of a delicatessen business burgled the night before, triggered off a reaction which led to the apprehension of the culprit — a juvenile. Mr Keehan was delivering goods to a customer in Waipahihi when he picked up the hitch hiker on Lake Terrace. He asked the youth if he had been sleeping out, but was told that he had spent the night at one of Taupo's waterfront motels, at a cost of £2 5/-. Mr Keehan knew the motel to be a high class establishment and thought the youth's appearance and demeanour to be somewhat incongruous with that type of accommodation, and his suspieions were aroused. When the hitch hiker got out of his car at Waipahihi and headed off down the main road south, Mr Keehan contacted the Taupo police. Within a very short period the youth had been taken in for questioning and admitted having burgled Mr

Keehan's shop the night before. A sum of £4 in notes and some pies had been taken [ from the shop. A large pie had been bitten into, but about £10 in silver was left in the till. The boy was released into the custody of his parents to appear later before a children's court.
