Queen's Guide Certificates For Two Taupo Girl Guides
Two Taupo girl guides, Miriam Alexander and Patra Wong, will be presented with Queen's Guide certificates at the annual meeting of the Taupo Girl Guides' Local Association, on Thursday. There are about 130 Queen's Guide certificate holders in New Zealand. Of this number, Patra Wong holds the distinction of being the first Chinese girl to gain the award in this country. Only girls who are outstanding guides have the chance to qualify as Queen's Guides. They must first have all their guide badges before the age of 16 and they require a recommendation from their minister and headmaster before taking tests for the certificate. Community service is one of the most important tests and the guide must spend three months working after school in the community. This work varies from serving in institutions to giving aid in private homes. Another test, which is "sprung" on the guide with
only 24 hours' notice, involves giving assistance or performing some task in the guide's area. The girl is judged on her initiative in this job, which usually extends over a short period. There have now been three certificates awarded to Taupo guides. The third was to Judith West, who received her award about three years ago.
