Timber "Fifths" In Dispute
Suggestions by the Taupo County Councll to the Local Government Commission that Taupo should extend its boundaries woke the Waitomo County Council on Friday to the fact that a very considerable amount of timber "fifths" must have been paid to Taupo county in respect of timber carried to the main trunk railway over Waitomo roads. There was room in a salient east of Barryville for a small adjustment in boundaries, it was stated, where the three counties of Otorohanga, Taupo and Waitomo met, but the engineer, Mr J. McAlIister, was . emphatic that the council should not commit itself without much fuller investigations. It was mentioned that Taupo had an eye.on Ranginui Block in the south-east-ern corner of Otorohanga County, but Otorohanga was unlikely to agree readily to this area being added, especially as it would with the building of the Mangawhio bridge, be shortly securing direct access to the area. Taupo county engineer, Mr B. Burton, says it is unlikely any timber, on which the council received "fifths" had been carted over Waitomo roads.
