Nearly Third Of Applicants Fail Licence

Eleven of 38 new applicants for driver's licences failed written tests on rules of the road, the county traffic officer, Mr P. F. Westbury, reported to the Taupo County Council. Seventy-six applicants were tested, including 26 over 70 years old. Sixty drivers of heavy motor vehlcles were stopped during June and 22 were reported for various offences. Sixty-one other road users were reported for offences and 10 were warned. Nineteen prosecutions were conducted. Road conditions had been bad in some areas due to ice. Warning signs had been erected and sand spread to combat these conditions.
