WAITING LIST FOR ROUNDS
There was a waiting list of 13 to obtain milk vendors' licences in the board's area, it was reported at the annual meeting of the South East Waikato Milk Board at Tirau on Tuesday. Some names had been on the list for four years. It was stated that it was unlikely further milk rounds
in the area would be created. However, those on the waiting list would have the first opportunity for purchase if rounds came up for sale. The meeting agreed to a request from the South Waikato Milk Vendors' Association for an increase of the maximum retail equivalent for a milk round from 135 gallons of milk to 150 gallons. The association stated that the majority of vendors were now handling this quantity of milk well. They had purchased equipment for -a service of this size. The increase was necessary to meet rising costs.
Sign of the Times "This is a sign of the times," Mr U. R. MacDonald (Taupo County) commented. "More work is being done with less people in New Zealand today." The application was granted, it being stated that the increases in gallonage, spread over the board's wide area, would not warrant the creating of another round. Satisfactory reports on the vendors' service were given by the board's inspector, Mr W. J. McNicholas, although there was overall room for improvement for the covering of milk. The question was raised concerning the age at which children could be employed on milk rounds. It was stated that children 14 years and over, but not 16, could not be employed before 6 a.m. Children aged ten, but not 14, could not be employed before 7 a.m. Children under ten could not be employed at all.
