WHAKAMARU HALL IS OPENED

About 300 guests attended the official opening of the N.Z. Electricity Department's hall at Whakamaru The hall is of a very modern design and should be a great asset to the district. The main room is 30ft x 60ft with a large stage and is well heated. There is ! also a meeting room, billiards room, well equipped kitchen and dressing rooms. The £20,000 spent on its construction over the past 12 months appears to have been well spent. Mr W. J. Shanks, District Engineer, officially opened the hall and commended the committee responsible for all the work and detail that had gone into the planning of the project, especially Mr G. Sinclair, who had previously been chairman of the social committee. Future Growth Mr Sinclair had carried a large share of the burden and Mr Shanks advised the young people of the district to make full use of the recreational facilities provided as it would make them fitter and better able to perform their duties at work. He received quite an ovation when he said that he was sure the hall would provide for the future expansion of the district when the programme of enlargement of the existing generation capacity of all stations in the area got under way.
