Youth Club Working On Hall Renovations

Taupo Maori Youth Club is the first of its kind in New Zealand to become an incorporated body. Reporting this to the recent annual meeting of the club, the president, Mr T. A. Kapua, mentioned some of the work done by members during the past year. More than 600 hours' work were put in by 103 people on the site of the old Taupo court house, leased to the club by the Historic Places Trust. The work included demolition of the out-buildings, left behind after the removal of the police house, repairs to the roof, rebuilding the front porch, installing a pair of panic doors and the removal of a partition in the hall. Mr Kapua said the club had, for some time, been interested in obtaining a hall for its exclusive use and it considered itself fortunate in obtaining the use of the old court house. "Since we took over the hall, members and other Taupo people interested in the project have been engaged in working on the building," he said. Maintenance of the building is the responsibility of the club and the main source of income is from fund-rais-ing. The club has about £230 in the building account, but extra finance is required for

the purchase of more materials. An application for a Golden Kiwi grant is to be made by the club. Mr Kapua said he was grateful to the Tuwharetoa Trust Board for its annual grant of £25 toward the cost of maintenance of the hall.
