VIETNAM
Sir,— Irrespective of one's views on the sending of New Zealand troops to Vietnam — and only a fool would deny that there are not arguments for and against — most people must agree with Mr Holyoake when he said that the decision to send troops was "perhaps the most significant taken . . . by any Government in New Zealand since 1950" (Hansard, 1965, page 7). Nearly every speaker who followed the Prime Minister in the Parliamentary debate emphasised this significance. It is, therefore, with considerable surprise and not a little concern that on page 49 of the Parliamentary debates we find Mrs Rona Stevenson, National M.P. for Taupo, was neither in the House for this crucial debate nor does she appear to have been absent through sickness or public business important enough for the Government whips to seek a pair. Many Taupo voters, both for and against the Government's decision, probably would like to know why Mrs Stevenson was absent during this debate. — Yours, etc.,
B. S.
GUSTAFSON.
