PUBLIC OPINION
CAREERS Sir,— During the recently-held careers advisnry course conducted by the Taupo College, my interests were turned in the direction of journalism. As I am very int-erested in writing and newspaper work, this seemed the most likely prospect in Taupo. My time at the Taupo Times turned out to be two of the most beneficial days of my year. The purpose of this course being to help in the choice of future careers, pupils tried to learn as much as possible about the various aspects of our chosen work, such as qualifications needed, promotion available, wages, but above all, what the job entails. The careers course was very successful and the aim accomplished. I found, as many other pupils did, that my (and their) specific job was far more interesting and widely varied than I (and they) thought. I was quite ignorant of the fascinating work of newspapers and reporting. To see a story progress from the initial stages of being written, to the "finished product" in the paper, gave me, a temporary guest, a sense of pride and achieve-m-ent. So, on behalf of all fourthformers and myself, I thank all teachers and businessmen concerned for the opportunity given to us. — Yours, etc., - GAII MERCER. '
