The youthful Taupo golfer, G, F. Fearn, had the most important success of his career to date when he won the final of the South Waikato open championship at the Tokoroa links on Sunday. There were eight contest ants in the match-play championship, including E, MacDougall, the former national amateur title-holder. In the first round, Fearn beat D. Berry (Tokoroa) at the 19th and, in the semifinal, Fearn had a 4 and 3 victory over W. Morris (Tokoroa). In the other half of the

draw, T. Christie (Tokoroa) emerged as a finalist after he had convincingly beaten MacDougall. Fearn lost the first hole in the final and he had an uphill struggle throughout. Twice he was four down and after the 34th hole he was dormy two down. Fearn finished magnifieently. He won the 35th and 36th holes to square the match and, finally, won at the 37th hole when Christie three-putted. Fearn played excellent golf throughout the tournament and, in the final, was equal to par figures for the 36 holes.
