Rotary Directors Report

Special attention was paid to the bringing in and as^imilation of new members during the past year, the direetor of the club service committee, Mr Stafford Pearce, reported to the Taupo Rotary Club on Thursday night. Reports were receivech from the four directors in charge of committees prior to the end of the club's year on June 30. Dealing with community service work, Mr N. W. T. Dolman said several working bees had been arranged to restore the soundshell for the Taupo Youth Centre Christmas carnival. The

area was fenced and seating placed in position. Rotary magazines were supplied to the Taupo Public Library. Tree planting was carried out with a rewarding result. Mr Dolman said the trees were now thriving except for the need for weeding and grasscutting. The community service committee had, in conjunction with the St John Ambulance Association, organised the collection of a record amount of subscriptions to the association. Rural-urban relations had been fostered by a special function for farmers from surrounding districts. The committee had organised the annual collection for Corso, for which £370 had been raised. Mr Dolman said the committee was at present working on the procurement and placing of suit-ably-inscribed seating near the Tongariro Street reserve. A profit. of £125 from the annual Rotary ball had been donated to the Taupo Kindergarten Association. Mr Barron I)aw(son said the international service committee had, on behalf of the club, continued to support twp children in the S.O.S. children's village in Austria. Taupo candidates for Nev Zealand citizenship wert welcomed at the naturalisa tion ceremony.

The club had continued jits support of the Volunteer I Service Abroad organisation with a voluntary levy | among members. - Efforts were being made to obtain impwved overseas distribution of a film, "Taupo Moana", bought by the club. i Through the J. R. M-c-Kenzie Youth Education Fund, the vocational committee had helped to finance a child to boarding sehool, Mr J. Ireland said. A shop courtesy contest had been arranged with successful results. Efforts to organise an apprentice exchange scheme had been unsuccessful, mainly because of apathy on the part of some employers.
