False Alarms Plague Turangi Fire Brigade

Turangi Fire Brigade has had 32 fal^e alarms out of 33 calls this month. The deputy chief fire officer, Mr Ray Young said: "The majority of the false alarms have been deliberate. One night the brigade had as many as eight calls. All of them were false alarms." Should the Turangi brigade fail to answer, the call automatically goes to the Tokaanu brigade, five miles away. Earlier this month the Turangi brigade began manning the station 24 hours a day. At the start of the month the Turangi telephone exchange switched from manual to automatic. 'Before that happened," said Mr Young, "false alarms were unheard of."
