Test Drilling In Broadlands Area Now

Plans are being made for a test drilling programme to be carried out in the Broadlands area in the search for new sources of geothermal ppwer. The Ministry of Works project engineer, Wairakei, Mr A. C. L. Fooks, today said it was intended to drill in the old Broadlands homestead area, in the Rotorua county, and across the other side of the Waikato River, in the Ohakuri area, in the Taupo county. Mr Fooks said the Waiotapu field, which had already been the subjeet of first phase drilling, would be looked at again. "The Waiotapu field had never been regarded as a 'dud'," he said. Other areas that would probably be looked at in the future were TokaanuWaihi and in the Taupo district. He said two holes had been completed at OrakeiKorako but it appeared the source of the field was deeper than was at first expected.
