LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
ROAl) SAFETY Sir, — Remembering the Lake Terrace Road as it was with dust and potholes, it was a pleasure to see it hrought up to highway standard. Pm sure that no motorist would object to his petrol taxes being used in this manner but surely a little more foresight would have avoided the death-traps designed into our off-road parking areas. The danger lies in authorising parallel .parking in front of these areas. A motorist leaving the area has to drive haif onto the highway hefore he can see, or he seen, hy on-coming traffic. As if this hlunder were not enough, we are now
presented with the speetacle of thousands of pounds being spent in widening and improving the safety of the road from the control gates to town only to have the ad- ! vantages of this splendid and essential im ]) r ovementi i marred by parking from | | Redoubt Street to the | ! Bridge. I No doubt this area will j he used during holidays hy i visitors wishing to view ihe ; | control gates. They will he Jaiightiiag from their cars in- ; j to the path of vehicles trav- j j ellihg out of town. Surely our roads have ; enough danger spots now | without creating tliem. If £Road Safety" is to be the motorist's slogan, then let I the road pianners' slogan he ! £iRoad Safely." — Yours. etc., ; "AROUND THE BEND."
