Convicted Of Theft Of Money
Richard Thomas Simon, 20, a Turangi concrete worker was convicted of theft by Mr G. J. Donne, S.M. in the Taupo Magistrate's Court 011 Tuesday, and fined £20. He was also placed on probation under special conditions for a year. Prosecuting, Sergeant T. A. A. Marson said that on May 6, Simon had gone to the hut of a friend, at Turangi single men's camp. Mr S. V. Williams, who subsequently found three £10 notes had been taken from a table. Three £10 notes were found in Simon's possession by another man who had previously held part of Simon's pay packet for safe custody. He knew Simon had more money than he should have. In the meantime, Mr Williams had notified the police. Simon admitted having been in possession of the three £10 notes, but said he did not know where they came from, having consumed a lot of drink. For Simon, Mr J. L. Wragge suggested that his client was not sober enough to know what had happened. No one saw him take the money. Mr Donne held there was sufficient evidence on which to convict. Simon had been in custody for one month.
