REVIEW OF COMMUNITY ACTIVITIES BY TAUPO ROTARY CLUB

With 180 members, including approximately 100 juniors, the Lake Taupo Yacht Club had the largest membership of any sailing club in the Bay of Plenty area, which included Tauranga. This was stated by the commodore of the club, Mr H. Philpott, during a review of community activities at the Taupo Rotary Club tea meeting on Thursday. Referring to the large numher of junior members, Mr Philpott said the elub considered it was doing something for the youth of Taupo. In recent months five members of the club had joined the Royal New Zealand Navy. The club was lucky in that it had available probably the best sailing water in New Zealand. Fund-raising activities had started for a clubhouse, which would be built on one of the best sites in Taupo. Mr Philpott said the clubhouse would offer facilities

in keeping with the superb site and would enable the club to handle national ehampionship regattas with ease. Discussing the Taupo Youth Centre, the president, Mr A. Armstrong, said the recent annual general meeting was not a success beeause of a lack of support. It was planned to eircularise every playing member of the indoor basketball and badmlnton clubs requesting that they attend a public meeting. "If the meeting is not supported I think the centre will go into recess. uIf the meeting is supported I think the time is right for a queen carnival to be held for fund-raising purposes." Taupo scouting activities were covered by Mr J. Ireland, who said serious shortage of scouters was hampering operations. Only 28 boys are receiving scouting instruction beeause of a shortage of instructors. The Taupo Red Cross Society centre was making great progress, Mr J.^Tonge said. Every local appeal had re- ' ceived gratifying support 1 from the Taupo public.
