TOKOROA BEATS TAUPO IN MEN'S HOCKEY MATCH
Tokoroa heat the Taupo men's hockey team 4 — 3 in a game played at Kaimanawa reserve on Sunday. The match was fast and interesting, even though | heavy rain had made the i | ground slow and heavy. | Taupo began at a remark- ; ably brisk pace and, play- ; ing intelligent constructive | hockey, rushed to a 3 — 0 lead after 15 minutes' play. Ian Strange (2) and Mike Tritt both scored. At this stage Tokoroa, a fairly | strong team, which plays | regular competition games in the Piako sub-associa-tion, was becoming bustled. However, Taupo was unable to maintain such a fast
pace and the fitter Tokoroa team gradually raised the siege and scored themselves shortly before half-time. After the resumption, the game continued at an even pace, but Taupo was now being called upon to adopt a more defensive role. Tokoroa captain, Kelvin Barlow, at inside left was play ing a shrewd game and directing his forward line well. Ex Fiji representative, Vernon Campbell, played soundly on tlie right wing and was quick .to capitalise on two misunderstandings between Taupo's left half, Ken Moates, and left back, Russell Righton. At 3 — 3 Taupo was still very much in the game and made several sorties into Tokoroa's goal area, where Ian Strange was unluckv not to score. With two minutes to go Tokoroa forwards rushed through Taupo's defence and notched the winning goal. College boys, Mike and Graham Tritt and Russell Righton played good games for -Taupo, while the other members of the team showed that with regular competition play, the side could become a good one.
