Letters To The Editor

TORMENTED TURANGI Sir; — Let us not add to their worries by inflicting on the

people of Turangi long-win-ded Maori names which even the Maori's themselves cannot agree as to their meaning. Visualise such a name fondly interpreted as That Place where Tamehana bit the Kuri, news even in those days. Not so says rival Maori elders. The word means That dark Place where Hinemoa mistook stinging nettles for moss. A good vjoke for the old-time Maori. There are already longwinded Maori street names in south Lake Taupo. Are they popular- Definitely not. The most vociferous

of the Maori people for the long names seem to prefer Pakeha names for every-day-use as being more convenient and understandable. " The claim that Turangi wants names to commemorate the past is a good one indeed so long as it is not too long past. So let us have a Pakeha-Maori effort to please everyone. I am full of suggestions. Yours etc, Wee Puku (Abbreviated).
