N.Z.W.U. PLUMPS FOR HUTS INSTEAD OF HOSTELS FOR SINGLE MEN AT TURANGI
The New Zealand Workers' Uuion has turned down an offer by Ministry of Works for hostel accommodatibn for single m en on the Tongariro power development at Turangi. This was explained to the Turangi Liaison Committee by the project engineer, Mr A. W. Gibson. He said that before the engineers began the planning of the town, the union was asked for its opinion and "plumped for hostels." "The planning proceeded on that basis, beeause it was planned to use the hostel buildings later for j motels and b'ecause it was; better for the single men | to be sited next to the | hotel," he said. "Now the union wants hut accommodation for its men and it is not considered this would be appropri- ; ate in the area next to the ■ hotel." The site for the huts had been moved further away from the town centre. It is understood the N.Z.W.U. decision came as a result of a canvass
among single men which i resulted in a decision to ob- 1 ject to the hostel accommodation and to prefer the system of hut accommodation. . i
