Youth Centre Nearly Had To Abaudou Meeting;
Apathy Among Members
The Taupo Youth Centre was nearly faced with abantloiiing its annual meeting on Thursday, because there were insufficient people present to form a quorum. A member of one of the affiliated bodies, the Taupo Indoor Basketball Associa-
tion was needed to find | enough people to make up the total. In his report, the president, Mr A. Armstrong, said he was thoroughly disgusted with the lack of support from member organisations of the centre. "Do they really want this nevv stadium, or do they not," lie said. He was referring to the | proposed youth stadium in j Taupo, which was estimated two years ago as costing in the vicinity of £30,000. Mr Armstrong said that ! he thought that from the apathy oi the sports groups I ! that they were not inter- : ested in supporting the j ; centre. - "It is hecoming increasingly ohvious that we are never going to reach our | goal until we get active, repeat active support," he ; said. He followed this by tellj ing the meeting that Taupo | Indoor Basketball Associa- | tion had by far- the great•est number of members^
and he thought they would: possibly have more use for ; the hall than any other or-: ganisaffon. "It is only reasonable to expect the most support from this body, at the same time we do not exclude any of the other member clubs. "If this siipport and assistance is not forthcoming then I for one do not intend to waste my time serving on a committee whose sole purpose in life is pure impossihility. "Even my own committee, which started off with a large, and I thought, ' enthusiastic att. endance, dwindled down to the usual half clozen keen members as the real work got closer. "Ladies and gentlemen this is not good enough, and I again stress that no one is going to work for a project which is impossible because of lack of manpower. "We will be having committee nominations this evening and I would stress to all that if nominees are not prepared to serve a full term of office and to work as and when required, then I feel sure they will not be
welcome on any committee, certainly not on a committee of which I am president," Mr Armstrong said. The election of officers followed after Mr Armstrong had informed the meeting that he wanted someone with more time than himself to take over the position of presiclent. Officers elected were: Patron, Mr J. Stanley (nominated); president, Mr A. Armstrong; vice-presi-dents, Messrs D. Dawson, R. Wade, I. Logan; secretary, Mrs B. Clark; treasurer, to be elected.
