SWITCH TO AUTOMATIC
Twenty - seven telephone linesmen and other technicians were on duty at Tokaanu and Turangi, at 7.30 a.m. yesterday for the change-over to the automatic telephone service. The postmaster at Tokaanu, Mr N. Williams, said the switch-over went almost without hitch, although the dial tone on some of the telephones was not functioning. Mr Williams expected this problem to be overcome jduring the afternoon. j | The new exchange will jserve '302 subscribers, but | will be capable of serving 1 5000. It will be fully utilised as the township grows. j Before the switch-over, subscribers in the area had two telephones, but now they have all been converted to automatic and the older type handsets will be removed. The swTitch-over, which took only a few minutes, was attended by Mr C. W. Hayward, engineer in chief for New Zealand, Mr W. H. Hickson, district engineer, Rotorua. Mr C. H. MaeMurray, senior engineer, Rotorua, Mr F. J. Timms senior technician, Rotorua.
