Most In Favour Of Power
Scheme
Ninety-five per ceht. of the visitors to the Tongariro Power Development public information centre at Turangi express themselves in favour of the scheme, according to the officer in charge, Mr W. A. MacGibbon. The remainder had som form of adverse commen — mainly against possible interference with fishing and landscape disfigurement. Mr MacGibbon has been in charge of the centre for about three weeks. A retired headmaster from the Elgin School, Gisborne, he took the job because of his interest in it. His interest in the devel opment scheme is intenss and, as an angler of 35 years' experience in the dis* trict, he has no qualms about fishing being adverso ly affected. "The scheme will be no deterrent to fishing and
angler s will have six extra lakes, all with spawning rivers running in, to fish," he said. Since the end of December, some 6500 people have visited the centre. A lot of them have signed the visi tors' book and added remarks in the space provided Some are critical, some humorous but the majority favour the scheme. Following are a few chos en at random: — "A credit to the M.O.W." "It had better not spoi1 the fishing." "You took our water (Taumarunui)."
