Taupo is enthusiastic about Tv.
Television is as much a part of the NZBC today as radio and has come to be accepted as a part of the daily life in New Zealand. Taupo residents have taken fenthusiastically to Tv. which brings to their homes many happenings and personalities they could not ordinarily see. As early as 1949, a Government inter-departmental committee was set up to study overseas experience in the development and operation
of the new medium, and official and private agencies had begun some limited experimental work. In August, 1958, the PostmasterGeneral and the Minister in Charge of Broadcasting jointly announced the Government's adoption of proposals for the use of the 625-line system as the standard for anv television .service in New Zealand. Two months later, the New Zealand Broadcasting Service — the departmental predecessor of the present Corporation * — obtained
| approval for the purchase of equipment to enable technical investigaj tions to be made on television cover plans, transmitter sites and equipment, and suitable operating frequencies. In February, 1959, experimental transmissions began from a lowpowered station in Auckland to as-' sist N.Z.B.C. engineers in site selection and other preparatory work. Spasmodic at first, the transmissions went on to a regular basis after May 18 of the same year.
