THREE-STAGE PLAN FOR TURANGI HOTEL PREMLSES
Dominion Breweries Ltd, of Auckland, have been advised they can go ahead with plans for a licenced hotel at Turangi on the basis of a threestage plan. They have been advised of this by the Licensing Control Commission, which has approved in principle a licensed hotel costing £250,000 for the new township. A decision on the granting of a licence was reserved pending consideration by the commission of the licence to cover the hiatus of 1966, when the first stage is expected to be complete and the period between the completion of the first and second stages. Submissions seeking authority for a hotel premises i licence to be issued on the completion of a temporary bar were questioned by the chairman of the commission, Mr S. T. Barnett, who said it appeared the applicants had not seriously considered a canteen licence. Mr W. S. Otto, who presented the submissions on behalf of the applicant, said he did not think there would be any objection to
a canteen licence, but it was thought that under ' the special circumstances existing at Turangi the commission might be able to exercise its discretion. Mr Barnett: "Our discretion is somewhat circumscribed, I'm afraid." Mr I. G. Dudding, who appeared for the Ministry of Works, said the department would not oppose a canteen bar being conducted by the applicants. Mr Barnett said the issue of ari hotel premises licence could not be granted until the first stage had been finished. The alternative was for the applicants to work in conjunction with the Ministry of Works under a canteen licence.
