EARLY RADIO PROGRAMME RECALLED
Oue of the early programmes broadeast from a private station in Palmerston North was Desert Island Discs. A Taupo man with clear recollections of this programme is Mr J. Louisson, of Waitahanui. He spent half an hour as an announcer on it once. The theme was "if you were stranded on a desert island with a few records
of~your choice which would you choose?" Mr Louisson said this programme caused a lot of amusement among people in the Palmerston North area. * That was back in the early 1930's when there were two private stations broadcasting in the town. At that time, Mr Louisson was a radio hani. He said that, unlike today, amateur radio enthusiasts had to
construct most of their own transrnitting equipment and there was much competition and experimenting among hams in their efforts to get the best reception. "There seems to be just as much interest in radio ham work today, but there is not as much experiment-1 ing to be done," he added. "Research in radio equipment since those days, and especially during World: War 2, has largely removed; the amateur from this field," Mr Louisson said.
