Radio IZA Takes The Air
Taupo's own radio station will be commissioned by the N.Z. Broadcasting Corporation next Saturday. Operating at two watts on 1500 kc, it will give the town and district the first satisfactory radio coverage it has had. With the call sign "IZA" — the station by the lake — it begins with daily broadcasts froni 6 to 9 a.m. with the promise of longer hours as the support for the station grows. The most modern and up-to-date
equipment has been installed at the station and two one-watt transmitters will be used in tandem so that if there is any breakdown in one half, the other can eontinue operating. A staff of four will run the station under the leadership of the manager, Mr G. Haggett. With him will be the announcer, Mr K. Stevens, the technician, Mr R. Miller, and the receptionist, Miss H. Aitken. Individual staff members are capable of doing a variety of work so that interchange of jobs will be possible.
The modern, well-designed station building overlooks the lake, town and most of the district it will cover. Perched on the top of the controlgate hill, it will have one of the best views in Taupo. The actual opening ceremony will be performed at 6 p.m. on Saturday evening when the first broadcast will be made. This will be followed by a reception in the Memorial Hall, to which a number of representatives of groups and organisations have been invited.
