TAUPO GIRL AWARDED HER QUEEN'S GUIDE BADGE
r . , The unusual distinction oi' being awarded the j Queen's Guide Badge has come to a Taupo girl after a long period of training and study. She is Miriam Alexander, daughter of Mr and Mrs W. A. Alexander, Taupo, who was recently presented with her badge by the president of the Girl Guides' Association of New Zealand, Her Excellency, Lady Fergusson. This is one of the many j ways in which character training is given to New Zealand guides. A Queen's Guide must be a First Class guide and show that she is trying to carry out the guide ideals of service in , the community.
To qualify for her position she must take part in a progressive test system through which, in responding to a series of challenges, she develops qualities of character as well as growing in skill and knowledge. All-round progressive training is given in the tests for second class and first class badges, and further scope for individual interests and ability is given in the proficiency badges. She must be an all-round guide, taking a full part in her company's activities as a member of a patrol, learning to think for herself and to be prepared for anything. As a Queen's Guide she must have learned something of the Commonwealth and of her membership in it, and she must have proved herself willing and able to use her guide training in service to the community in a variety of ways.'
