Davies Goes Behind The

Iron Curtain

Prominent district athlete, John Davies, isto embark on a six week oversea.s athletic tour next month which will take him for the first time to a country behind the Iron Curtain. He has aceepted an invitation to run at Warsaw (Poland) and Prague (Czechoslovakia) where he will once again be matched with his close friend and rival J. Odlozil who took a silver medal ahead of him in the 1500 metres event at the Tokyo Olympics. Davies will travel with Auckland distance runner Bill Baillie on the tour which will take them to Canada, Great Britain and a number of other countries in Europe.

They will leave with Peter Snell and leading athletic coach, Arthur Lydiarcl, on June 7, r^turning on July 19. Snell will not accompany Davies and Baillie on the complete tour as he will leave Canada to compete in the United States national championships, rejoining the party again in Europe. Davies' complete itinerary is: June 10, Toronto; June 14, Manchester (England); June 19, Warsaw (Poland); June 24, France; June 30, Helsinki for the World Games; July 3, London; July 9, Prague for the Spartakiad; July 15, Oslo. On the return journey, Davies is hoping to call at Mexico City, venue for the 1968 Olympics, to test the effects of high altitude running.
