FIRST FIVE HOUSES TAKEN OVER BY MoW AT TURANGI

The first five completed houses for Ministry of Works workmen on the Tongariro power development job at Turangi were taken over yesterday. They are ready for occupation and will be allotted straight away. The houses were taken over by the MoW senior engineer at Turangi, Mr J. Rennion, from the supervisor of the MoW housing division, Mr J. B. Burton.

Mr Bennion made the final check on the houses yesterday afternoon • after housing division overseers Messrs J. Cranefield and N. Denby, had completed a systematic check throughout the five houses. Three more houses will r be taken over by the end j of the month. They were all built by Taupo con- j tractor, Mr E. A. Mahood.j The MoW hope to takej -over one hundred houses by mid-July. All houses have been built to the same standards. whether for occupation by senior MoW staff or workmen. They differ only in the number of bedrooms prcvided. Two of the houses j taken over yesterday wrere three - bedroomed, two were two-bedroomed and one had four bedrooms. Maintenance for the first three months will be the responsibility of the housing division, thereafter the MoW will be responsible. All have solid-fuel spaceheaters in the lounge, wThere there are also three "power points. There are three power points in thej kitchens in addition to thej power points for the elee-j

tric stoves. The bedrooms and dining rooms also have power points. Floors have been sanded and the interior decoration is of the highest order, wallpapers and paint-work toeing eqnal to that in many expensive private residences. The surrounds have been levelled and will be soon down in grass for the occu-

pants who will be expected to form their own gardens All houses have concrete paths and twin wheel-ways for their garages — in which lighting and power points have also been pro vided.
