Women Discuss Results Of Courtesy Week

In Taupo

The recent "shop courtesy week" in Taupo revealed some interesting facts to the wives of Rotary Club members who conducted a survey and awarded points for the most courteous shop assistant in the town. Starting with two extremes, members found teenage assistants well below the standard expected from a person required to help the public, but they found shop managers and senior assistants to be satisfactory" in most respects. Three members, whose opinions could be considered representative of the group, said teenagers assisting in shops were generally well dressed and presentable, but they lacked the knowledge of the business in which they were engaged and many of them were

apatbetic about their positions. The group suggested this problem conld be overcome by initial training of the young person before he or she served in the shop. Some senior assistants or shop managers were found to be too pressing of their wares and did not permit the customer time to browse in the shop. i However, members said | this was a matter of personal opinion, as some people prefer to be shown what to buy as soon as they enter. Chemist shops were found to be the best establishments for liaison hetween assistant and customer. The women found them helpful and able to show an intelligent interest in matte& concerned with the business. In some types of businesses there was a lack of desire to foster goodwill. In these cases, the

group thought the "take it or leave it" attitude was conveyed to the customer. Taking the town as a whole, members thought it had a smart, modern appearance which gave the impression of a prosperous town. They considered most of the shops were well laid out and clean, providing incentive for the public to enter and look round.
