Big Crowd Watches Taupo Indoor Basketball Tourney
Watched by the largest gailery ever seen at indoor basketball in Taupo, the Taupo Indoor Basketball Association held its second annual tournament on Saturday*
Taupo, with two women' s and one men's team entered, could not do better than have their men's team reach the semi-finals only to be defeated by the eventual winners, Whakatane. With a record number of entries from as far afield as Hastings and Whakatane spectators were treated to a feast of good basketball which lasted from 8.30 a.m. to 10.30 p.m. Whakatane women, Kawerau and Murupara had the same number of wins at the end of the day and Murupara were deelared the eventual winners on a count-back. Murupara had played good basketball all day and thoroughly deserved their win. Whakatane men's team played excellent basketball and on the day were the best team. With the class
I of the opposition in the men's section, Whakatane showed that they are _ a team of which more wiil be heard. The Stanley and Elwin Shields have been taken from Taupo and it will be j a year before opportunity arises to plav for them j again. In a few weeks the Taupo men's representative team will be taking part in the i Bay of Plenty regional tournament which is to be staged in Whakatane thi£ year. j
