STOCK-PILE OF METAL ON LAKEFRONT FOR ROAD RECONSTRUCTION

THE stock-piling of metal along the lakefront in reeent weeks has given rise to eonsiderable speculation upon whether it is the first step toward reconstruetion of the highway. It is, but when the actual work may begin appears to be a matter for further speculation, since tlie plans have not yet been approved by tlie National Roads Board. Stormwater Problem From inquirios made by the Times, it appears that the reconstruetion of about one and three-quarter miles of highway from. a point level with the end of Roberts Street to just beyond the Taupo borough boundary, has presented a number of diffieulties. A major problem, of course, is the best means of carrying away the stormwater from the Rifle Range and Kaimanawa Roads junction, whieh in bad weather is the foeai-point for a eonsiderable volume of stormwater. Ministry of Works engineers have had to devise tlie most efficient- way of taking that unwanted water to the lake. The drains will have to go beneath the new road. Both sides of tlie highway will have kerbing and chaiinhlling, otherwise the stormwater along its length could not be controlled. Traffie Diversion One question which naturally arises is : Wliat will liapjien to traffie while the road is being realigned and reconstructed V The answer seems to be that tlie first mile from the town end of the highway to Mere Road will present little difficulty wdien traffie has to be diverted. For the remainder of ihe streteh, no doubt the highways engineers and eontraetors will eontrive to eause the least inconvenience to traffie. Last, but by 110 means least, is ihe question of whether the National Roads Board will expect the Taupo Borough Council to bear pai't of tne cost, and if it does, what that will be in ponnds, shillings and pence.
