UGLY BANK OF POLES ON LAKEFRONT OUTSIDE TAUPO BORO.
Taupo County Commissioner, Mr A. H. O'Keefe, is not at all happy about what he called the "ugliest bank of poles along the Taupo waterfront," but just outside the borough boundary. The county is investigating the possibility of having wires placed underground. He raised the matter of the advisory committee's wish to help ln "pushing, where necessary, for the reticulation of power into certain parts of the county where they need it hadly." Mr O'Keefe proposed that the advisory committee should investigate the possibility of getting, in some plaeex at least, the wires put underground. "Could Not Be Done^ "In tlie borough they have always kept the poles off tlie lakefront, but you will notice that just outside the boundary, they have tlie ugliest bank 011 tlie waterfront. "At Hatepe they are unhappy about power-poles being strimg along, and at Acacia Bay poles are being stuck up%. . . "Some people at Acacia Bay told ine they would rather pay £50 to have the wires underground, but they were told by the electricity authority that it could not be done in that case. "I tliink that is the sort of thing thc electricity conimittee of Taupo county could go into.*' Tokaanu "Off Map* Other members of tlie advisory eommittee agreed. Mr J. A. Asber, a inember of Tongariro riding, said he had been tohi that as far as Tokaanu was concernecl, lt would be at least 12 months beforc power could be brought tueri- . "When power comes to Tokaanu, it Yvill develop that district a hiindreclfold," he said. "We are off the map at Tokaanu till we get it."" Mr Andrew Murray, consulting engineer, of Auckland, who was present at the meeting, said he would take out comparatlve figures on costs of aerial aua underground wiring, and report to the committee.
