The school hopes to realise £200 net in this effort to build up a fund from which school sports trips will be subsirlised, to lighfen the burden which parehts are eai'rying. Mangakino HardHit MiUVgakino, hard-hit by- the present 11 u pandemic, had to scratch a rugby and basketball team. At the same time they had to witlidraw another Rugby team from a Waikato-sponsored tournament. Their Rugby team comprised players from tlie lirsr, second and tliird NVs. Results : Rugby: Taupo 1st XV 27, Mangakino nil. Basketball: Taupo A 24, Mangakino 11. Hockey : Taupo Boys 3, Mangakino Boys 2; Taupo Girls nil, Mangakino Girls 1, The Taupo Rugby team had a very good try-out hefore their trip to St Stephen's College and Auckland Grammar School today and tomorrow respeetively
G. Dallington and J. Barlow had a splendid day scoring half the points between them. The back line enjoyed a feast of the ball and used it to advantage.. H. Lewis was once grabbed by the arai and he passed the ball smartly across liis back with the other liand to Barlow who scored in the corner. For ward With Future H. Thompson led the forwards well, and the thrust and resourcefulness that he has developed this season marks him as a for ward of the future. The rest of the pack toiled as a unit and more tlian held their own. At basketball Mangakino A were not at full strength, and they proved no match for Taupo A, who are at present three points clear in the main senior basketball competitions. Taupo took advantage of the many mistakes of the visitors. P. Livesey, Z. Flutey and E. Rewa worked hard in the centre to give their forwards every opportunity. The Mangakino forwards were very accurate, but did not see much of the ball tli rough the Taupo centres and defence, who did not let much get past them. Hockey With A Dash The Taupo girls' hockey team played with more dash and determination than they have previously, but they still persisted in feeble hits and passes. Taken all tlirough, however, they showed improvement over their previous encounter with Mangakino by four goals. The Mangakino girls believed 111 the hard hitting and erisp passing game, whicli gave them the superiority that won them the game by the one goal. Janet WToolf was the best of the Taupo players and put in a tremendous amount of usefnl work. Pat Taylor toiled throngh a hard day's defence, and Kay Donnelly is beginning to show form as a centre-forward. In the boys' match, Taupo avenged their previons defeat when tliey won by the odd goal. They showed more determination than usiial, though their stickwork laeked ftnish. The glimmerings of intelligent hockey has begnn to sliine throngh 111 the Taupo defensive work. II. Gillies and I. Lamont comhined very well. P. Smith and M. Nelson showed aggression in tlie for ward line, and Nelson was unlucky with several shots. Smith does not ruri himself into position for liis shots.
