(By

Mainbrace)

James Fox performed solidly for tliird in the Motion Handicap at Pukekohe on August 3, and it is likely that he will do so again at the Matamata Racing Club's spring meeting on Saturday. The Motion Handicap was run over oue m i'e and two and three-quarter furlongs, whereas the George .Tobnston Memorial Handicap is over oue and nquarter miles and 22 yards. .Tames h'ox has 7.11 in this event, only half a pound more than he earried at Pukekohe. It is tlie fir'st leg of the doublc The second leg is tlie Steward's Handicap, which has attracted 13 starters. Probably the liardest for James Fox to beat will be Sambula — better known as a sprinter — Nor East, Zohov and Trench Light. Before racing at Pukekohe James Fox, a four-year-old gelding by Brer Fox from Merry Mood, rau a close tliird to Pliiladelphia and Totaranui at Te Awamutu, being beaten by a nose and half a head in a particularly tight flnish. It, was a very good introductioii to tlie higlier class in which he is now racing. Sambula, a four-year-old horse by Treasure Hunt from Lovemorm has been placed in eacli of liis last four starts, but all were over sprint distances. In liis most recent efforts, liowever, Sambula has revealed more stamina than was apparent in liis earlier racing and lie may run on well. Sambula's most recent important suc-c-ess was scored in the seven furlongs' Onslow Handicap at Wellington on July 13 wbeii he had a head to spare from Peter Willonyx and King of .Tov. Any deterioration of track conditions will be to Sambula's advantage. Selections : Peria Haek and Hunters' Steepleehase : Glenreagli, My Prince, Thepeen.
