PASSED LICENCE TO ANOTHER, CAUGHT IN ACT
Two men involved in the switching of a driving licence wlien a traffic officer stopped a car in Tongariro Street last .Tune because its headlights were wrongly adjusted, wrere fined by AIi- AY. A. Harlow7, S.AL, at Taupo Police Court. They were Augustinus Johannes A1--bertus van der AATater, who was fined £4 and costs £1 for parting with possession of a licence so that it could be used by another person, and Alfred .Sapi.nski, who was fined a similar amount for giving a false name and address to a traffic officer, and costs £1 for liaving liis headlights w7rongly adjusted. Traffic Officer A. AY. Loper said he stopped a car at 7.30 p.m. on June 22 in Tongariro Street because of its lights. He asked tlie driver for his licence, gave oue look at it, and asked the driver to drive tlie car to the side of the road. TOOK SECOND LOOK "I had another look at the licence, and noticed there was a eondition that the licence-liolder used glasses. Sapinski, who was driving, did not wear glasses, but van der AATater. who wTas sitting alongside him, did. Sapinski tried to pass the licence off as his own. "AATien I questioned them, they adliiitted that van der AAYiter had parted with his licence." AATien the magistrate asked van der AA'ater why he did that, defendant said he thought that while he was in tlie front seat, he could supervise Sapinski's driving. Alr Loper: Sapinski had a licence, but be lost it at Kawerau. Alr Harlow toki van der AYater that it was a serious thing to do. "Things go haywii-e if we couldn't depeiul upon a driver having a licence," he said.
