JAMES FOX AND SAMBULA FANCIED FOR PUKEKOHE DOUBLE

(By

Mainbrace)

The Brer Fox-Merry Mood gelding James Fox is a popular fancy for the Motion H'andicap, first leg of the dotible at the Franklin Racing Cliib's winter meeting at Pukekohe on Saturday. The race will be rim over a distanee of ten and three-quarter furlongs. It has attracted 14 aeeeptors. The Members' Handicap is the second leg. It has drawn 13 horses, including Sambula, impressive winner of the Onslow Handicap at Trentham at his last start, On this form Sambula should be a hot favourite for Saturday 's sprint event.

At his previous start -at Te Awanui tu last week James Fox ran a close third to Philadephia and Totaranui, being beaten by a nose and half a head in a particularly tight finish. James Fox was badly checked near the three furlongs peg, where he lost three lengths, but despite this setback he finished in rare style. It was an exceedingly auspieious entry into the ranks of open class handicappers in the Auckland province. When. Lurdened with 9.11 James Fox ran 8th in the Pukekawa Ilack Handicap at Paeroa a week or two ago, but earlier he had won three good races in a row. He impressed as a likely sort to make his mark in the best of company. Most, difficult for James Fox to heat may be Philadelphia and Innes Lass. The former finished well to win the prineipal flat race at Te Awamutu last week, wliile Innes Lass' third to Totaranui and Nor' East at Paeroa gave promise of better things to come. At best Innes Lass is well up to this class. It is difficult to imagine anything heating Sambula in the Members' Handicap, although Jacks' Coimt has •an excellent reeord on the Pukekohe track. However, Jack's Count is a dual acceptor and his connections may elect to start liim in the Motion Handicap. Selections : PUKEKOHE Mauku Ilack and Hunters Steeplechase: Rubyevrns, Tapeva, Tudor King.
