TRENCH LIGHT, TRIPLE CHANCE ARE FANCIED

(By

Mainbrace)

Reasonably large fields will ] compete in all events at the Taumarunui Racing Club's annual meeting at Te Awamutu on Saturday. The principal attraction is the £800 Taumarunui Cup, of one mile and a quarter, and it is the first race of the double. The second leg is the Stewards Handicap. These events have drawn fields of 14 and 12, respec'tively. Despite his failure at Matamata a fortnight ago, the Te Rapa-trained Trench Light makes the strongest appeal in the cup event, but strong opposition is expected f rom the recently-promoted hack, James Fox, and Classeen. Trench Light, who looks well placed for an overdue success, will be attempting to win his second Taumarunui Cup, the aged Trench Fighit-Ngamoko gelding having won the event last year from Anzio and Triibimal. His last success was in the Poland Cup at Paeroa last year, but prior to his failure at Matamata, when he appeiared' to have been short of work, he performed promisingly for second to Arva at Te Awamutu. He has been working well in the meantime. Hardest for Trench Light to defe&t may be James Fox, a three-year-old bay gelding by Brer Fox frorrj Merry Mood, who has won his last three races. The manner in which his successes were recorded suggests that James Fox will stick on well. Classeen raced well but without success at Trentham, but she is sure to be improved with her outings there. She makes considerable appeal on a heavy traek. Triple Chance, three times a winner and once second in his last four starts, is likely to be a popular fancy in the second leg of the double, the Stewards Handicap. The five-year-old Double Chance-Cerulean gelding disputed the lead at Paeroa last week and ran on well to win by threequarters of a length from Hutt Valley, with Thomastown half a length further back in third place. Hutt Valley is an improver who may test Triple Chance, while Tribunal, who has not raced since January, invariably races well when fresh. Like Trench Light, Tribunal is a Te Awamutu specialist.
