KINLEITH SOUTH HIGHWAY CONDITION CRITICISED

Condition of the highway south of Kinleith Mill was described as " terrific " by Cr. H. Kendall at the Matamata Ccunty CounciTs last meeting. " One part was three inches deep in slush, and vehicles were being pulled out by a tractor. Will the highway be left like this for the rest of the winter ? " Cr. Kendall inauired. The chairman, Mr. I. K. Wood, said that frosts had caused the sealing to lift. Some of the trouble was caused by drivers of logging trucks applying their brakes at the bends, Cr. Kendall said. " A New Zealand Forest Products Limited official told me that any of the company's drivers found doing over 30 miles an hour would be dismissed," Mr. Wood said. Cr. J. K. Logan : We are not officials of the company. The engineer, Mr. G. W. Ensor, said that the Ministry of Works had let a contract for the reconstruction of the stretch of the highway from Kinleith Mill to the old county boundary. " I don't think there will be much delay in the work starting," Mr. Ensor said. " We will certainly hammer home the condition of the highway at the meeting of the 2C District Road Council next month," Mr. Wood said.
