ROYAL RULER, TUPS FANCIED AT PAEROA

(By

Mainbraee)

The three-year-old Te Rapa trained gelding Royal Ruler, winner of the Arawa Hack Handicap at Matamata last week, is selected to win the Waimata Hack Handicap, first leg of the double at the Maramarua Hunt Club's annual meeting at Paeroa to-morrow. / This event has attracted a field of 21, but the Paeroa Handicap, second leg of the double, has drawn only nine horses. The principal flat race on the card, the Ohinemuri Handicap, has attracted eight acceptors.

The Waimata Hack Handicap is run over nine fur.longs for a stake of £250. Because a lim.it field is engaged luck in the running is sure to play an important part in the race. The

hardest for Royal Ruler to beat may be Beau Teal, who ran the race of an improver for third in the Arawa Hack Handicap at Matamata, and ' Fair Luck. The Cambridge owned and trained Fair Luck ran unplaced at her last outing in the Second New Lynn Handicap at Avondale earlier this month, but at her previous start s-he'won the Te Hinemoa Hack Handicap at Te Awamutu. Fair Luck is a three-year-old bay filly by the successful sire Fair's Fair from Murmur, and is trained by W. W. Townsend for Messrs G. A. James and F. Hunt. Tups looks to have a bright chance of winning her second race of the season in the Paeroa Handicap, second leg of the double. This five-year-old chestnut mare by Lord Barwon from Tepoto won the Flying Handicap on the same course last September. Two starts back Tups ran an excellent second to Upper cut in the President's Handicap at Avondale, and slight improvement should see her taking the thick end of the purse tomorrow. However, there are some speedsters in this race, and Fatehpur Sikri, Smiling Princess and Thomastown may provide stiff opposition. Arran Chief, a previous winner on the course, may have benefited from his outing at Matamata last week, while Hutt Valley and Triple Chance must be respected on the country circuit.
