17 PER CENT. RISE IN TAUPO POPULATION IN YEAR

WITHIN 12 months the population of Taupo has risen by no iess than 481 to 3330, an increase of 17 per cent. According to the Department of Statistics the population at April 1, 1956, was 2849. A year later an estimate placed it at 3330. It has exceeded Putaruru's 3020, which represents an increase of 203 persons since the census was taken. One effect of the rise here is that the National Roads Board allocation for road work within the borough will be £2502, as against £2131 last year. The town clerk, Mr K. G. Winton, said this week that the current estimates showed £2150 for this year. The board allows 15s a head of population for the work.
