Smokehouse Permit The Borough Oouncil was advised by the Medical Officer of Health, Hamilton, under date January 9, that it was hoped that a visit could be made to Taupo toward the end pf the month when the matter of Mr R. F. Houghton's application for a permit for a trout smokehouse could be discussed and the site inspected. The letter stated that the Town Clerk would be advised later of the exact date of the visit. Extension of Bowling Green In a letter read at the Borough Oouncil's reeent meeting Mr F. Bostock, secretary of the Taupo Bowling Olub, said that the Club was anxious to proceed with further devel'opment of the grounds occupied biy the Club, but wished to have finality over the matter of a lease, and would appreciate any help the Oouncil could give. The Council decided to write to the Oommissioner of Crown Lands asking him to expedite completion of the lease. Proposed Motel Writing to the Borough Oouncil under date January 8, Mr R. MacD'onell, of Palmerston North, made application for permission to erect a motel on his property, Lot 22 (MacDonell's Estate), in accordance with the Councirs requirements, and stated that if approval were given he would submit complete plans and specifications. Or Vedder moved, seconded by Or Barton, that approval be given subject to site and building plans and specifications being submitted for approval. Traffic Officer's Report In a report to the Borough Council covering the month of December, Traffic Officer S. Miller stated that the following offences had been reported to the Chief Traffic Officer : Exceeding 30 m.p.h., 3 ; driving without due care and attention, 1; dangerous driving, 1 ; driving while intoxicated, 2 ; no driver's licence, 1 ; miscellaneous, 4. Yerbal warnings were issued to many offenders mainly for incorrect parking. Twenty-eight applicants for drivers' lieences were tested, of whom five would require a further test. Borough Foreman's Report Reporting to the Borough Council on work done in December, the borough foreman, Mr K. Rameka, stated that 16 drums of emoleum had been used in patehing tarsealed roads, 11 drums on Rifle Range Road, four on Heuheu Street and one on Mere Road. One man had been on duty every morning cleaning conveniences at the Municipal Camping Oround, and two men every other night scrubbing and cleaning the swimming pool at the A.O. Baths. The foreman asked the Oouncil to consider extending the machinery shed to house the Councirs grader, and also the purchase of another motor truck, as the work was growing and they were always liiring outside trucks. When these were not available the tractor and trailer were used for truck work, which was much slower and not very satisfactory. The Council considered and adopted the report. Gaol for Theft In the Magistrate's Court on Monday, January 23, before Justiees, Len Bridges, alias Renata Wharepapa, aged 21, of Kinleith, was charged with the theft of tyre repair outfits from the Lakefront Garage on January 21. Constable W. D. Mills, prosecuting, stated that acused, who pleaded guilty, had been seen to take the goods from a display stand when at the garage with companions whose car was receiving repairs. Accused was convicted and given a month's imprisonment in Tongariro Prison. He had previously been'granted a year's probation on a charge of theft.
