CRICKET NOTES
Reporoa Beats Taupo The Taupo Cricket Club's eleven sustained its first loss of the season by a margin of 35 runs in its match against Reporoa last week-end. Reynolds gave Taupo a good start by knocking back the middle stumps of three of the first four batsmen. Then Reporoa's left-hander Gordon Syme settled down and aided by Stagg and Rowe, and also assisted by a change of "bowling, improved their position to reach a total of 93. As a medium paced left-hand bowler, Govan showed promise, although he proved expensive toward the end of his bowling spell. Sutherland gave away fewer runs in his eight overs than a bowler of his pace could reasonably expect to do, but Taupo missed the steadiness usually provided by Jack Nathoo or Sam McKean. Brian Sherwood hit the first ball of the Taupo innings hard to Coates at point to enable Hathaway to commence a Taupo debacle. Sherwood further assisted when as substitute fielder he caught Reynolds from a careless stroke. Sutherland gave a catch to the wicket-keeper oft Hathaway and three men were out for 7. David Roberts then hit about him, and a partnership with Acres took the score to 38 before Philpott came on to bowl the latter for 9, and to get Roberts caught on the boundary for 25. Towards the end Govan batted well before running himself out for 9 and the innings ended for a total of 58. Of Reporoa's total of 93 Syme made 33, Rowe 16 and Stagg 13. Bowling for Taupo, Reynolds took 4 for 14, Sutherland 3 for 20, Govan 1 for 26, F. McKean 1 for 13. Of Taupo's 58, Roberts made 25. Bowling for Reporoa Hathaway took 3 for 15, Philpott 3 for 9, Rowe 1 for 10, Buckingham 1 for 12.
