During the past week Ngauruhoe volcano has been in angry mood, and its increasing activity has indicated the possibility that lava flows similar to those of 1954 might again occur. The mountain's record in historic times, however, shows that such flows need not necessarily be expected, for ash emission, with the ejection of lava blocks on to the outer slopes of the cone, has occurred a number of times only to die away without the extrusion of lava.
