GOLF SEASON CLOSES

Preservation Of Prizes The Taupo Golf Club's closing day was held on Saturday last, when a mixed Ganadian foursome stableford was played, and cups and trophies won during the season were presented. Speaking prior to the presentation, Mr L. FI. Cheal, clnb president, welcomed visitors, and went on to say that the club could looked back on the season with pleasure and pride. It was the first season during which the full 18 holes had been available, and they took pride in the work carried out. Many visitors had offered congratulations 011 the club's achievement, and rnuch credit was due to the club captain, Mr J. W. Woodward, who had supervised work 011 the course. Thanks and appreciation were also due to their greenkeeper, Mr Larry Frost, for the keen and able way he had carried out his duties. Mr Gheal expressed appreciation of the way in which the ladies had provided teas and lunches for tournaments and inter-club niatches, in addition to doing so 011 ordinai'.v days. (Applause). Thanks were also due to Mr Ted Pearse for the time and work given to the club. They had had a very good season, and there had been many reductions in handicaps since play comrnenced on the full course. The club had now got something which had been built up by the older members, and he would ask the younger members to come along whenever there was work to be dorie and put their backs into it, for they would have to run the club when the older ones had "had it." Miss Branson, ladies' captain, thanked all who had helped to make the ladies' open two-day tournament such an outstanding success. They had thought that 50 entries might be received, and it was with surprise that 108 had been received, of whioh 96 were accepted. She had never heard such spontaneous congratulations as those offered by the tournament visitors. The men of the club had been of tremendous help in kitchen and waiting duties during the tournament, and special thanks were due to Mrs Gheal and Mrs Irvine (applause), Mr Gheal and Mr Nelson and staft', Mr Sherning, and to Miss McKelvie, their secretary. The cups and trophies for the season were then presented by Mrs L. H. Gheal, as follows : Ladies' Ghampionship Cup, Mrs G. W. Foote (with trophy presented by Mr J. A. Fenton) ; runner-up, Miss J. Branson. Men's championship, E. M. Smith; runner-up, G W. Foote. Aeknowledging the presentation, Mr Smith said that as they knew he had started golf as a boy in Taupo, and he felt that the championship was the biggest honour he had achieved. (Applause) . Ladies' junior championship, Mrs B. Bennett; runner-up, Mrs J. F. Watson. Men's junior championship, G. Thomas ; runner-up, G. Sutherland. Men's G grade championship, A. Dance ; runner-up, R. G. Bjorngaard. Ladies' captain's trophy, Mrs B. Bennett. Ladies' Foursome Cup (and trophies presented by Mrs I. B. Logan), Mrs B. Bennett and Mrs Fearn. Ladies' two-lifer competition, Mrs B. Bennett: runner-up, Mrs Barrell. L.G.U. silver medal, Miss J. Branson ; L.G.U. bronze medal, Mrs Nelson. Forster trophy, Mrs Mclsaac. Ladies' eclectic (trophy presented by Mrs Douglas), Mrs P>. Bennett, 'Ladies' points competition, Mrs Nelson ; runner-up, Mrs B. Bennett. Ladies' Winter Cup, Mrs G. W. Foote. Ladies' Tauhara Cup, Miss Branson and Mrs G. W. Foote. Miller Cup, Mrs B. Bennett. The president referred to the fact that this cup was given not only for the player showing most improvement, but for general deportment, and said tliat its award to Mrs Bennett was particularly wellmerited. (Applause) .
