November 12 and 13. was the firs t L a d i es ' T o u r n a m en t held i n I Taupo vs well as being Ihe first two day lournament to be so held. Ideal : weather prevailed and the course vvas lin exce'lent order. The Club reeelved many congratullations on the course itself and on ■ the general suceess of the • tournaIment. The nien members of the Club, lled by the captain, Mr J. W. The rncn carried out their duties so I pleasant.lv and successfully that no I doubt their wives will hand over to Ithem many of the household chores. The Championship was won by ■ Mrs G. Chapman. of Havelock North. Iwho defeated her sister, Mrs R. Bet[tington, of Napier, at the 21st hole. [Both played exeeilent steady golf. Ihalving Ihe first six holes in bogey, lexcept for 5's at the 1st and 4th; [where bogey is 4. At the 7th Mrs [Bettington pulled her drive into the
I rough, recovered well. but then put Iher 3rd into rough to the left of the Igreen. Mrs Chapman played a perIfect drive, and followed it with a Ibeautiful 6 iron to the green. and was Iconceded the hole. j The 8th hole was halved in bogev Ifour. and the 9th in 6's, Mrs ChapIman being 1 up and out in 40 to prs Bettington 's 43. The 10th was [halved in 5's and Mrs Bettington won [Ihe 11th in 3 to Mrs Chapman 's 4. |This made them all square. The next [3 holes were halved in 5's, but Mrs IBettington won the 15th with a 3. [Mrs Bettington was deadly with her jputting throughout the match, while [Mrs Chapman had lost- touch with [her putter.
8 At the 16th, however, Mrs Chapmar ■came to the fore with a perfect bogey Bt and followed it with another bogey lat the 17th to be one up after the ■17th. On the 18th Mrs Chapman hit Im exeeilent drive while Mrs BettingIton had pulled hers. However, she ■played a very good wood to the ggreen, and Mrs Chapman pulled hers ■into the rough to the left of the ■green and lost Ihe hole. 1 The match oontinued from the 19th. ■halved in 5's, to the 20th. where Mrs ■Bettington sank an 8 foot putt for ■another half. By this time there was I large and interested gallery. Mrs ■Chapman played well onto the green ■but Mrs Bettington had a bad lie in Ihe rough and played to about ten Ifeet from the pin. She failed to sink Ihe putt and Mrs Chapman got a Jbogev 3, winning the match one up. I The Club President. Mr L. H. Cheal.
