Pigs Near Tovvn On Friday, October 7, a locai xnotorist c-rossing the Control Gates Dam . about midday, going north, was surprised to see two sows with litters ; emerge on to the main road from the , scrub opposite Chase's turn off on the righthand side. There were some 15 or 10 pigs in the two litters, and it was obvious the animals were wild. It; was though t that they had worked down toward the river through fern and scrub country to get water. River Wildlife Refuge The Conservator of Wildlife, Rotorua, Mr S. A. McN-amara, has advised the Borough Council, in reply to its proposal that the Waikato River from the Outlet to the Control Gates Dam be declared a sanctuary, that the area is unsiufable to hold the status of a wildlife refuge. Mr McNamara suggested, however, that the moiastatiou or shooting of birds wfttoi the area could be prevented by a by-Iaw preventing tbe discharge of tir^ams within the area. The Council decided to seek the co-operation of the Taupo County office in regard to the western bank of the river, which is not in the borough.
