PROVISIONS RE WATER RATES & METERING
Provisions with regard to rates and charges whieh may be made and levied in respect of the supply of wnicr | fo lantls and buildings are made in ; the Municipal Corporations Act, 1954. Section 90 of wliich deals with the | rates payable for the ordinary supply | in districts where the system of rat- 1 ing on the unim] roved values is in j force, as it is in Taupo. If. however, such a rate would produce less 1 ha ii oue pound in respect of any land or dwellinghouse tlien the Councii may inake and levy thereon a eliarge of not more tinui oue pound. On all buildings' otlier than dwellinghotises, the rate which may be made and levied is oue not exceeding luilf of the rate mentioned above. S.imilarly, on lands and dwellinghouses to which water can be, but is not, supplied, situate witliin oue lutndred yards from any part of the water works, the rate whicli may be made and levied is also one not exceeding ha II' of the rate mentioned a 1 »ove. In regard |o ihe ax! raordina ry supply oi: water, wliich is Ihe supply for other than the usual household or genernl ])urposes, as deiined by the bj-laws, the rates shall be such as may be fixed by any by-law, or as may be agreecl on, subject to such by-law, with and person receiving that supply. Metering Charges Section 97 of the Act provides for the metering of water supplied, in respect of the ordinary as well as of the extraordinary supply. Under this section the Couneil may, with the consent of the Governor-General in Couneil, mnke and levy water rates and charges according to tlie quantity of water consumed by any person receiving the same, as measured by rneter. These rates or charges may be such as may be fixed by any by-law of the Couneil, or as may be agreecl on, subject to any sucli by-law, with any such person. Rayment of Water Rates Water rates for an ordinary supply, under Section 98 of the Act, shall be payable in advance on such day or days, either yearly or halfyearly, as the Couneil determines. Rates for . an extraordinary supply, and all other charges in respect oi the supply of water, shall be paid at such times as the Couneil directs. Where any land or building be* comos liahle to a water rate aftei the date lixed for Ihe yearly or halfyearly payment, a part only of the rate shall be payable in advance, or the liability accruing, such part being proportionate to the unexpired part of the year or half-year. Where water is supplied to a new building not valued in the valuation roll then in force, the valuer for the Couneil under the Rat ing Act shall fix the value for water rate purposes and water rates shall be payable acconlingly until the nexl rate-hook is made. Where water rates or charges are not paid the Couneil, under Section 99, may stop the supply in such manner as it thinks fit and recover the expense of so doing.
